General description:

Hollow-structured nanomaterials with an inner void space and an outer porous shell have drawn increasing interest in the fields of adsorption, catalysis, energy storage, and drug delivery/controlled release, owing to their unique properties such as high porosity, low density, large surface area, abundant inner void space, etc.

Typically, the inner void space of the hollow-structured nanomaterials can supply a special environment for confinement of different species (e.g., metal ions, reactants, guest molecules, proteins, enzymes, nanoparticles) and result in void-confinement effects, which could induce dramatic performance enhancements in specific applications for process intensification, such as to increase the reaction rate, to realize confinement synthesis,and to enhance the storage capacity.The outer porous shell can provide well defined channels for transfer of guest species, which often can result in mass transfer limitation and/or a molecular sieving effect (determined by the sizes of guest species and pores in the shells).
