Early stationary phases of gas-solid chromatography—Silica Gel Adsorbent

In the early development of gas chromatography, silica gel could be used as a stationary phase for gas-solid chromatography and as a carrier for gas-liquid chromatography. Because of differences in the production process, raw material surface area, and pore size of silicone, there are significant differences in its separation performance. For this reason, the manufacturer has carried out standardized grading, there are also different brands and specifications of silica gel for chromatography.

At that time, Tianjin Second Reagent Factory in China also produced DG-1, DG-2, DG-3, and DG-4, their performances are similar to Porasil A, Porasil B, Porasil C, and Porasil D. For example, Superlco and Sigma Aldrich supply silica gel packed chromatography columns for analyzing sulfur compounds: Chromosil 310 and Chromosil 330, with many reports of actual use.

There are not many users of silica gel adsorbents for filling columns, but there are still people using them in the analysis of sulfides. For example, Hui Wang et al. from Shanghai University used Chromosil 310 and GDX 502 (polar polymer porous spheres) to analyze ppb level SO2 in hydrogen gas through adsorption desorption chromatography (Intern. J. hydrogen energy, 2010, 35:2994-2996)

Martin Steinbacher et al. from Germany also used Chromosil 310 columns (152cm x 3.2mm id) to analyze trace amounts of carbonyl sulfide and sulfur dioxide in soil and atmosphere (Atmospheric Environment, 2004, 38:6043-6052).

Evelyn E. Newby from the UK used Chromosil 330 columns (244cm x 3.2mm id) to analyze gases such as hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan in oral gas at 60 ° C to evaluate the effectiveness of toothpaste in eliminating bad breath (Archives of Oral Biology 532008, Supply. 1: S19-S25).

Julie K. Furne et al. from the United States analyzed hydrogen sulfide in feces by using Chromosil 330 columns (244cm x 3.2mm id). (J. Chromatogr. B, 2001754:253-258).

M.Steinke et al. in UK used headspace gas chromatography with Chromosil 330 column (183cm x 3.2mm id) to determine dimethyl sulfide and evaluate the activity of thiobetaine lyase. (J. Sea Research, 2000, 43:233-244).
